Brexit has been replaced by an Olympic ‘feel-good’ factor! Supermarket sales were at their best for 3 years in the 4 weeks to August 13; however, the ‘big 4’ giant Asda saw its market share continue to fall. The hot weather and the Olympics have resulted in a 0.9% uplift in the value of total grocery sales – the best figure, excluding Easter and Christmas, since 2013. Reports have noted that the figures would have been even better if it weren’t for the grocery price war. However, the grocery price inflation was still negative, with an average basket 1.3% cheaper than last year!
