Sainsbury’s have announced plans that will leave hundreds of “store trainers” redundant. As part of their programme that was introduced in November 2014 in which Sainsbury’s aimed to save £500m over 3 years, they have announced they will be eliminating the role of “store trainer”. The role is currently held by 870 employees and will be replaced with 280 “learning and development manager” positions. Sainsbury’s will be encouraging their senior employees to apply for these positions, however 590 people will still face redundancy.
Sainsbury’s was the only member of the Big Four to have increased its sales in the 12 weeks to 27 March. Sainsbury’s however pointed out that this decision is part of their long term programme.
