Morrisons donating all unsold food to charities to avoid food waste
Endaba Group
Morrisons is the first supermarket group to implement a nationwide programme that will donate all unsold food to those in need rather than letting it go to waste. This rollout follows the success of their pilot in 112 stores in Yorkshire after public outrage over the amount of food thrown away by supermarkets back in May. 15 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK per year by supermarkets and families at a cost of £5bn. Eliminating food waste should be a top priority.
However other grocers, like Tesco, do donate some surplus to organisations such as Tressell Trust.
