Clothing and accessories are now the highest selling category in the US! Whilst computer hardware has been the long-time leader in online sales, in 3 of the 4 quarters of 2015, the sales of clothing and accessories topped computer sales. ComScore’s senior analyst Adam Lella claims that with the growth of m-commerce, ‘people are more likely to purchase less expensive, less complex products on mobile than they are to buy computer products’. He also claimed that shoppers are now using their mobile phones as their primary computers, causing the growth of computer sales to slow. One company that has capitalized on this growth is Amazon, who have been investing in their online fashion presence and this category is now out-selling electronics and non-apparel items. Clothing retailers with mobile sites are set to benefit from this shift in sales, with online shopping now becoming a past-time, particularly for the younger generation.
