Amee Change, former UK Managing Director of Tesco’s Nutri Centre health business, has been appointed the newly created role of UK Managing Director, the etailer’s first ever UK boss. She will be responsible for bringing “the best of the Alibaba ecosystem” to UK businesses and shoppers.
Alibaba is looking to expand its presence in the UK and in turn, encourage more British retailers to launch in China through platforms such as Tmall. Sainsbury’s launched in China last month through a partnership with Alibaba’s Tmall website, five years after exploring their entry into the country. The etailer is planning to open offices across Europe, such as Italy, France and Germany, to attract more vendors; they have had an office in the UK for a number of years. Chande has worked for Staples, Walmart and McKinsey across four continents, including North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. Their President, former Goldman Sachs executive Michael Evans, who was appointed in August, is wanting to build ties to retailers and suppliers across Europe, the Americas and Asia. Chande’s global experience and insight will not only benefit Alibaba in the UK, but will also be integral in their international expansion strategy.
